Zamfara Approves Pension Increase for State, Local Government Retirees
The Zamfara State Government has approved an upward review of pensions for state and local government retirees as part of efforts to improve the welfare of senior citizens.
The government said the decision was taken in response to rising living costs and growing economic pressure on pensioners across the state.
Government approves new pension structure
The approval was announced in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Mahmud Dantawasa, on Tuesday.
According to the statement, the review followed recommendations from a special committee and the Office of the Accountant General after an assessment of the condition of pensioners, especially those in lower income categories.
The government explained that the existing pension structure had become inadequate due to current economic realities.
Pension review linked to minimum wage adjustment
The statement noted that the pension adjustment also aligns with the Federal Government’s consequential adjustment linked to the National Minimum Wage (Amended) Act 2024.
The circular recommended a baseline increase of ₦32,000 monthly for pensioners.
After reviewing available resources, the Zamfara State Government approved what it described as a 100 per cent implementation option for both state and local government retirees.
Thousands of pensioners to benefit
The government said thousands of retirees are expected to benefit from the new pension arrangement.
“Under the new arrangement, thousands of pensioners across the state and local government system are expected to benefit from the increase,” the statement said.
Officials added that the adjustment is intended to cushion the impact of rising living expenses on pensioners.
Governor Dauda Lawal reaffirms commitment
The administration of Dauda Lawal said it remains committed to improving the welfare of workers and retirees in the state.
According to the statement, the government will continue to implement policies aimed at strengthening social protection and economic stability.
The governor also directed all relevant agencies to ensure the smooth implementation of the new pension structure and timely payment to beneficiaries.
Welfare support for retirees
The state government said the policy is expected to improve the living conditions of retirees who served the state over the years.
Authorities added that the move forms part of broader efforts to support vulnerable groups and strengthen the welfare system in Zamfara State.
