US Must Accept Iran Peace Proposal or Face Failure, Says Chief Negotiator
Iran’s chief negotiator has warned that the United States must accept Tehran’s 14-point peace proposal or risk continued failure in efforts to end the Middle East conflict.
The warning came amid growing tensions between both countries despite an existing ceasefire arrangement.
Iran issues fresh warning to United States
Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf issued the warning on Tuesday after US President Donald Trump reportedly rejected Iran’s latest counteroffer.
According to reports, Trump described the current ceasefire, which has been in place since April 8, as being on “life support.”
However, Ghalibaf insisted that Washington must recognise what he described as the rights of the Iranian people if peace negotiations are to succeed.
Iran insists on 14-point proposal
In a statement shared on X, Ghalibaf said there was no alternative to accepting Tehran’s peace conditions.
“There is no alternative but to accept the rights of the Iranian people as laid out in the 14-point proposal,” he stated.
He also warned that any refusal by the United States would only lead to more setbacks and higher costs.
“The longer they drag their feet, the more American taxpayers will pay for it,” he added.
Peace talks remain deadlocked
Negotiations between Iran and the United States have remained stalled after previous talks failed to produce a breakthrough.
Reports indicate that the latest US proposal involved a one-page memorandum aimed at ending the conflict and creating a framework for discussions over Iran’s nuclear programme.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry said its response included demands for an end to the conflict across the region, including Lebanon, as well as the lifting of the US naval blockade on Iranian ports.
Tehran also requested the release of Iranian assets frozen abroad under international sanctions.
Iran raises uranium enrichment possibility
Meanwhile, Iran’s parliamentary national security commission said lawmakers may consider increasing uranium enrichment levels if tensions escalate again.
Ebrahim Rezaei stated that Iran could consider enriching uranium to 90 per cent purity if another attack occurs.
Experts note that uranium enriched to about 90 per cent is generally considered weapons-grade material.
Iran currently possesses uranium enriched to 60 per cent purity, which remains a major issue in negotiations with the United States.
Nuclear programme remains key issue
The United States has continued to insist that Iran transfer its enriched uranium stockpile outside the country.
Iran, however, has rejected that demand and maintains that it has the right to pursue peaceful nuclear energy programmes.
Although Tehran insists its nuclear activities are peaceful, officials have admitted that enrichment levels remain negotiable during future discussions.
