Climate Change Now a National Security Threat in Nigeria – NDC Calls for Military Preparedness

Climate change security in Nigeria is becoming a major concern as top military leaders warn of its growing impact on national stability. The Commandant of the National Defence College, Rear Adm. Abdullahi Ahmed, has described climate change as a serious and evolving national security threat that requires urgent attention and strategic military preparedness.

Speaking at a high-level roundtable in Abuja, Ahmed emphasized that climate change is no longer just an environmental issue but a complex security challenge affecting economic growth, governance, and human safety. He noted that climate-related issues such as desertification, flooding, and resource scarcity are already fueling tensions and conflicts in various parts of Nigeria.

According to him, the increasing pressure on natural resources is contributing to displacement, migration, and competition among communities, which in turn heightens insecurity. The event brought together military personnel, policymakers, academics, and development partners to explore solutions and develop strategies to address climate-driven security risks. Experts at the forum stressed that integrating climate considerations into national security planning is now essential for sustainable peace and development in Nigeria.
