Video Shows Rivers Assembly Speaker Questioning Nominee Over Tax Record

A video circulating online has revealed a tense exchange during the screening of commissioner nominees presented by Siminalayi Fubara before the Rivers State House of Assembly.

During the session, the Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, raised questions about the tax clearance certificate of nominee Charity Deemua.

Amaewhule pointed out that the document submitted appeared outdated and asked whether the nominee had been paying taxes in recent years.

In her response, Deemua told lawmakers that she had mainly been active in politics and did not have a regular job that generated income during that time.

However, further questioning revealed that she had briefly served in a local government caretaker committee.

The Speaker asked whether she received payment during that period, and the nominee confirmed that members of the committee were paid.

Amaewhule then questioned why tax clearance documents reflecting such income were not available.

The nominee apologised to the Assembly and indicated she might take steps to correct the issue.
