AFCON Controversy: CAF Strips Senegal Title, Awards Trophy to Morocco
The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) controversy has sparked global outrage after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) stripped Senegal of their 2025 title and awarded it to Morocco.
Senegal had originally defeated Morocco 1–0 in the final held in Rabat on January 18, 2026. However, CAF reversed the result 58 days later, triggering widespread criticism across the football world.

Secretary-General Abdoulaye Seydou Sow said:
“We will file an appeal and defend our rights. The law is on our side.”
Senegal players also reacted strongly. Sadio Mané criticized what he described as corruption in African football.
Meanwhile, Idrissa Gueye insisted that no decision could erase what the team achieved on the pitch.
Morocco Reacts to CAF Ruling
Morocco accepted the decision but maintained a measured stance.
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation stated that its appeal focused only on enforcing the rules, not questioning Senegal’s performance.
Reports indicate that the decision was welcomed in Morocco, although officials said they would respect any future ruling by CAS.
